— At Mezőkövesd, both György Bora and head coach Mihály Tóth may be familiar to Kispest supporters. The former came through the Magyar Futball Akadémia, while the latter also grew up at our club and was then a member of Kispest-HFC’s Hungarian Cup-winning team in 1996.
HISTORY
— Our opponents were founded in 1975 under the name Mezőkövesdi Munkás Sportegyesület. In 1990 the word “Munkás” was removed from the club’s name and until 2012 they competed as Mezőkövesdi Sport Egyesület. In 2013 the club adopted the name still used today, Mezőkövesd Zsóry Futball Club.
— We have so far played 26 competitive matches against Mezőkövesd Zsóry FC (23 NB I, 2 NB II, 1 Hungarian Cup). From Budapest Honvéd’s perspective, the record is: 10 wins, 7 draws, 11 defeats, 37 goals scored and 40 conceded.
NB I
The history of the fixture began in the autumn of 2013 at the Bozsik Stadion, where the visitors surprisingly won 2–0. Six months later the “return match” did not go much better, as the blue-and-yellows kept the three points at home with Menougong’s only goal. At the end of the season Mezőkövesd were relegated from the top flight and did not return among the best until two years later. In the autumn of 2016, the two teams met again in Mezőkövesd. Honvéd started very well and took the lead through Patrik Hidi, but the home side eventually won 3–1. In December 2016, the breakthrough finally came at the Bozsik Stadion, where Eppel’s goal gave us our first victory (1–0). In the spring of 2017, on our way to the league title, we won 5–1 thanks to goals from Lanzafame (2), Eppel, Dávid Bobál and Kamber. The most recent NB I meeting was played against Mezőkövesd on 21 May 2023 in front of an almost full house at the Bozsik Aréna. In a match crucial to avoiding relegation, the visitors won 3–2.
Hungarian Cup
The two teams have met once in the Hungarian Cup, in the 2020 final. We won the final at the Puskás Aréna 2–1. Both of our goals were scored by our current assistant coach Djordje Kamber. It was the eighth cup triumph in our club’s history.
NB II
Between 2011 and 2013 we played four matches against Mezőkövesd. In every one, our second team took the field, while our opponents fielded their first team. The side from Matyóföld won two matches (0–3, 1–3), while we won two (2–0, 2–1). An interesting detail is that in 2013 our goal was scored by Attila Lőrinczy, who is still part of the squad today. In Sunday’s encounter both teams will field their strongest available line-ups.
