Budapest Honvéd will face BVSC-Zugló in round 8 of the Merkantil Bank Liga. The two teams first met on April 1, 1940 in a friendly, which ended in a high-scoring 5-5 draw. Our first competitive meeting came in 1948 in the Trade Union Cup, which we won 5-3.
The two clubs have played four matches in the Hungarian Cup, the most memorable being the 1996 final. BVSC won the first leg 1-0, but Kispest won the return match 2-0 at the Bozsik Stadium. It was the fifth cup triumph in the club's history.
Between 1958 and 1999 we faced the railwaymen twenty times in the NB I. The most memorable of those top-flight matches was Kispest's 4-1 victory at the end of April 1994. Béla Illés (3) and István Hamar scored for the red-and-blacks, while Zugló's goal came from György Bognár, the current head coach of Paksi FC. The overall record stands at nine Kispest wins, six draws and five Zugló victories.
There have so far been two meetings in the NB II and both ended level. The teams drew 1-1 at the Bozsik Arena on December 3, 2023, while the match on May 26, 2024 ended goalless.
Sunday's opponents include two true Kispest figures. Patrik Hidi served the club for 15 years, while head coach József Csábi, with a few interruptions, spent 10 years as our player. Both enjoyed successful Kispest careers. Hidi won league bronze, a league title and the cup. Csábi has the complete league medal collection with bronze, silver and gold, the latter three times, and he is also a cup winner.
