We entered the 1989–90 top-flight season as defending champions and ultimately remained among the elite through a relegation play-off after collecting 35 points (Bp. Honvéd–Kazincbarcikai Vegyész 1–0, 2–2). We began the new season with a new coach, with György Mezey replacing Sándor Haász on the bench, and he quickly made a major impact on the team. The former national team head coach led our side in 60 matches between 1990 and 1992 (38 wins, 11 draws, 11 defeats), and celebrated a league title in his first season. Our team led the championship from start to finish and eventually finished five points ahead of Ferencvárosi TC, securing the club's 12th league title. In the following season, he guided the team to third place.
He led the Hungary national team twice (1983–86, 1988), in a total of 35 matches (20 wins, 7 draws, 8 defeats), and to this day he remains the last coach to have qualified the national side for the World Cup.
Dr György Mezey was 84 years old. May he rest in peace.
