Ádám Gyurcsó's 64th-minute goal gave our team a 1–0 victory over top-flight Diósgyőri VTK in the Hungarian Cup quarter-final and secured our place in the last four. The last time our team reached the semi-finals was in 2020, when we went on to win the competition. In our club's history we have lifted the cup eight times, as well as collecting 11 silver medals and one bronze. At the post-match press conference, Tamás Feczkó stressed that on Thursday evening his side had surpassed the opposition not only in willpower but in their football as well.
“As we expected, it was a very difficult match because both teams wanted to progress in the cup. At home, with the backing of our supporters, there was no other option than to win this match. That is how we started as well, because within the first 15 minutes we managed to break through the opposition's defence three times. Unfortunately, we had problems with the final action, because Megyó – Gábor Megyeri, DVTK's goalkeeper – ed. – did not have to make a save even though we had numerical superiority inside the box. From the middle of the first half, the visitors' long throw-ins pushed the play a little into our half. That was somewhat frustrating, but after the break we came out the same way we had started the first half: we wanted to decide the match as quickly as possible” – said our head coach, before stressing that he was proud of his team and of the fact that they matched their first-division opponents in footballing terms.
“I am very happy that we were able to match our first-division opponents in our football. We were able to surpass them not only in willpower but in our play too. I am proud of my team for once again being a real TEAM in capital letters today. Whoever comes onto the pitch is able to contribute. I feel sorry for those who could not make the squad or did not get onto the pitch; they would have deserved it too. I am happy that we were able to give our supporters such a memorable evening.”
Although injuries have repeatedly complicated Ádám Gyurcsó's time in Kispest since his arrival, it now appears that the 'walls have come down'. He scored the winner against Ajka and again this time, and our coach spoke highly of his performance. Interestingly, Gyurcsó was the Hungarian Cup's top scorer in the 2019-20 season.
“Everyone knows Ádi's qualities; he was a 20-time Hungary international for a reason. It was a very big thing that he chose us from several offers. He also had a minor injury during the winter preparation, but he caught up very quickly and definitely wanted to do something for the club and the team. We are very happy that his goal took us through today.”
We will face Zalaegerszeg in the Hungarian Cup semi-final.
