Four wins, one defeat – Here is how our youth teams performed.

A difficult match was in store for our U19s as they visited PAFC, who lead the league by a wide margin. The Felcsút side took an early lead and although we managed to equalise in the second half, the hosts kept all three points at home with a goal in stoppage time. László Takács's team are currently fifth in the table, only three points behind third-placed Kisvárda.

PAFC U19–Budapest Honvéd FC U19 2-1
Elite Championship, Round 14

Goals: Krupa (5.), Zahorán (91.), and Szelényi (54.)

László Takács's assessment:

„We managed to play a good match against the league leaders. We fell behind early, after which we had opportunities to score, but we were not precise enough in playing out our chances. The home side had more of the play towards the end of the first half. We came out well for the second half, managed to create chances and got the equaliser, and after that we also had opportunities to win because we created further chances. In the final minute, the hosts scored the winner at the end of a fine move, and there was no time left for us to respond.”

Our league-leading U17s hosted Ferencváros, with one second-half goal eventually deciding the match in our favour. Márton Bogdánfi's side continue to lead the championship, but as both Vasas and Szeged also won, their advantage remains two points over the other Budapest side and five points over the team from Csongrád.

Elite Championship, Round 14

Goal: Kis A. (54.)

Márton Bogdánfi, head coach:

„We played a very intense and exciting match. From the first minute the lads approached the game well, with the right level of aggression and motivation. We won a huge number of duels, which allowed us to get on top of the opposition. The team deserve praise for their attitude. We dominated the opening 20 minutes and had a lot of possession. We reacted well to losing the ball and our transitions were particularly good. In our attacking build-up we saw many of the things we had practised in training. Our press worked well and we won a lot of balls in the opposition half, but we were not sharp enough from those situations and could not exploit the opponent's disorganisation. After that we made some poor decisions when playing out from the back, as well as technical errors that allowed the opposition to create chances by capitalising on our mistakes. Unfortunately we missed a penalty in the first half, so our superiority was not reflected on the scoreboard. The strength of the team is shown by the way they dealt with that mentally and did not let it knock them out of their rhythm. In the second half we were able to raise the tempo of our own game. Our press was aggressive and effective. During this period our rest defence was also outstanding, so we kept the ball continuously and were able to put the opposition under pressure, which was reflected in a goal as well. We remained on top after that, but we did not always manage the rhythm of the game well enough; we could have controlled it better and kept more possession. We had our chances but could not extend our lead. At the end of the match we went down to ten men, and luck was also on our side. During those 15 minutes, and throughout the whole match, we functioned as one team, and that was our strength. Overall, we deserved the victory.”

Viktor Petrók's players travelled to bottom side Miskolc in Round 15 of the championship, but it was far from easy and an early goal ultimately decided the destination of the three points. Our side remain second, six points behind Vasas Kubala Akadémia and two ahead of DVSC.

DVTK U16 - Budapest Honvéd FC U16 0-1
Elite Championship, Round 15

Goal: Érsek (9.)

Viktor Petrók, head coach:

„Our play was relatively fine in the first half, although after taking the lead we could have been more patient in the build-up phase. We switched the play too little, were too direct and made several technical errors. That did not change in the second half; we could not control the game and the combative nature of football dominated. The positive is that by the end we were able to match them in that respect.”

Although the league positions suggested a Honvéd win on paper, we could not expect an entirely straightforward match against Zalaegerszeg, as only two points separated the teams before the round. Instead, István Körtvélyesi's players recorded a seven-goal victory and are now pushing for the podium places after both PAFC and DVSC lost in this age group. Interestingly, all eight of our goals were scored by different players.

Budapest Honvéd FC U15 – ZTE FC U15 8-1
Elite Championship, Round 15

Goals: Völgyi (14.), Solymos (16.), Vérten (20.), Kardos (43.), Marinyák (52.), Érsek (64.), Meggyes (72.), Brukner (76.), and Tornai (78.)

István Körtvélyesi, head coach:

„The match was effectively decided in the first twenty minutes after we built a multi-goal lead and dominated the play. In attack we were dynamic enough, but often rushed things and made several unforced errors. We still need to improve in quality to make our play cleaner. Our defending was good, we were on top throughout and won a high proportion of our duels. We controlled the match from start to finish and finally managed to convert our chances as well. Congratulations to the team!”

Even so, the show was stolen by our youngest academy age group. They travelled to second-placed PAFC in Felcsút sitting ninth in the table, but came away with a 2-1 victory.

U14 PAFC – U14 Budapest Honvéd FC 1-2

Elite Championship, Round 18

Goals: Dobó B. (26.), and Varga B. (19.), Balázs P. (66.)

Tamás Szamosi, head coach:

„Because of the weather conditions, continuous play could not develop on the pitch. Both teams fought tremendously hard to get the win. I am very proud of my players, who proved today that they can compete with teams near the top of the table as well. Today's victory was clearly down to the unity of the team. My players fought tooth and nail for one another today!”
