Head coach Márton Bogdánfi:
We faced a team that was strong both tactically and physically, which was good for us in terms of practising our own game. In the first half our intentions were good through the different phases of play, but a lot of technical errors crept into the execution. We were stretched defensively, leaving spaces between the lines that the opposition used well. We had less possession and the many changes of possession wore us down physically. At half-time we discussed these problems, and in the second half we improved a great deal both with and without the ball. We were able to have more possession and consistently play out through the opposition press under pressure because we played bravely and proactively. Thanks to our dominance we got in behind the opposition several times and created chances, which was also reflected in goals. In the final 20 minutes we played intelligently as the opponents tired. We exploited that well by playing creatively with few touches. Unfortunately, after an individual error the result did not reflect the balance of play, but overall it was a very useful match for our development.
Our U17s, champions last season, also hosted Maribor, with the Slovenian side ultimately winning at the Academy thanks to better finishing.
Budapest Honvéd FC U17–NK Maribor U19 (Slovenian) U17 1-2
Goal: Andrejszki (89.)
Head coach Viktor Petrók:
We played a good match against a good team. Our play on the ball was fine except for the finishing phase; our final-third play was characterised by poor decisions and execution. With our pressing and effective possession in certain periods we forced the opposition into mistakes several times, but we could not capitalise, while Maribor used their chances well.
Our U16s played away at Topolya, where despite a sending-off they left the pitch as winners.
FK Topolya SC U16 (Serbian)–Budapest Honvéd FC U16 2–3 (0–2)
Goals: Vérten (16. – penalty), Solymos (23., 52.).
Head coach István Körtvélyesi:
Unfortunately, despite what had been agreed, we played against TSC on artificial turf. In the great heat this had a serious effect on the quality of the match. In the first half we were able to play at a particularly good level. We broke down the opposition easily, but did not create enough dangerous chances from our runs in behind. Our defence was compact and difficult to break down, and the opposition did not manage to create a chance in this period. Unfortunately, in the 35th minute one of my players was sent off without justification and we were reduced to ten men, so we had to adapt. Early in the second half we went 3–0 up, but unfortunately the pattern of the game changed from there. The number of individual errors increased and we often put one another in very difficult situations. Our goals conceded came from this, but fortunately we were able to respond after a short lapse. At the end of the match we could have extended our lead further, but our finishing was inaccurate. The match was useful; we constantly had to switch and adapt quickly, and we solved the problem. Congratulations to the team!
