After a 2–0 defeat to Montenegro, Hungary’s U16 national team played for third place at the four-team tournament in Stara Pazova, Serbia. The opponent was North Macedonia, and Hungary won 2–1 thanks to an own goal and a strike from Norbert Kiss.
Áron Russnák from our academy was named in the starting line-up, as was our home-grown goalkeeper Mátyás Jakab, who has been a Juventus goalkeeper since February.
József Szabados, national-team coach:
We produced a slightly better performance than in Tuesday’s first match, but our play was very hectic, we were not sharp enough and good individual performances were missing. Some elements of our game worked relatively well, but we made many technical mistakes and I expected more from the match both defensively and offensively. What I do consider important is that even with a more subdued performance than usual, we were able to win the game, something the team can draw on later. The first competitive matches for this age group are approaching, and in the remaining months we still need to improve in many areas of our game.
