Hungary U17 faced Gibraltar on Saturday in round 2 of European Championship qualifying. Our side had drawn 2–2 with hosts North Macedonia on Wednesday.
Our academy player Áron Russnák opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, finishing from four metres after a cross. Then came the moments of Tamás Somogyi – who recently also made his debut for Honvéd’s first team. First he dribbled past four defenders and the goalkeeper before scoring, and at the very end of the half Gibraltar left him completely unmarked, allowing him to finish easily into the far corner from five metres and extend Hungary’s lead to three. Our 16-year-old completed his hat-trick in the 69th minute, finishing a move worked all the way to checkmate for Hungary’s sixth goal, before the age-group side ended Saturday’s match with an 8–0 victory.
Zalán Varga and Martin Bogdán also came on as substitutes in the second half, as Hungary prepared for Tuesday’s clash with the Czech Republic with a resounding win.
