On 9 December 2017, we defeated Paksi FC 1–0 thanks to a goal from Dániel Gazdag. That match featured not only our current assistant coaches with the first and second teams, Djordje Kamber and Ivan Lovric, but also our head coach Zsolt Laczkó. It was the specialist’s final Honvéd match as a player, and now, more than six and a half years later, he can return to the Bozsik Aréna, as Sunday’s league match against Mezőkövesd will be his first home fixture as head coach.
“We can recall that match, but I do not want to draw parallels; that is not what matters to me now, I only want to look forward – noted Zsolt Laczkó. – I have been head coach of Budapest Honvéd for two weeks and it is a huge honour for me to lead the first team of a club like this, so it will be a big occasion to have a match at the Bozsik again. The coaching staff have worked all week to make sure we can perform as well as possible. We have clear goals and we want to beat Mezőkövesd. For that we need a good performance and effective football, and we also need the backing of our supporters, because the Kispest crowd can help the team enormously and we are counting on them.“
Our head coach made his debut on the Honvéd bench a week ago away to Soroksár. Looking back on that match, he said it was clear that we need to take steps forward in every element of our play and continue to improve.
“We need to improve both in attack and in defence. We know that we have to offer more, and that is the spirit in which we trained this week; we want to see that progress reflected in our performance on the pitch – stressed Zsolt Laczkó, who can also count on Friday signing Zsombor Bévárdi on Sunday. – In training we worked on correcting the mistakes made in previous matches; we need a better performance. As I mentioned, I consider it a very special thing to coach one of Hungary’s biggest clubs in a legendary stadium. We have to be united, and in this situation we also need our supporters very much. I know the kind of Kispest atmosphere they can create and have created so many times at matches; that encouragement can give the team strength on Sunday.“
