Round 20 of the Old Boys championship brought a top-of-the-table clash, as Honvéd BKE hosted their biggest rivals, MTK Budapest, at the MFA Youth Centre. Erdei could only watch from the touchline because of injury, while Patkó returned to the starting line-up after a long absence.
After the 8–0 defeat in the autumn, MTK unsurprisingly organised their defence carefully. As usual, our team put the visitors under pressure from the opening minutes. In the 17th minute Patkó was pulled down inside the box, but the referee waved play on. The blue-and-whites' tactics were built around counter-attacks and the pace of their forwards, but the Kispest defence quickly snuffed out their rare attempts.
Kispest's dominance paid off in the 22nd minute. Bárányos headed Patkó's cross toward goal, the goalkeeper saved it, but Youla fired the rebound into the net from close range (1–0). The visitors' first dangerous attack came in the 30th minute, but Komora saved confidently. In the 37th minute Honvéd were forced into a substitution because of injury, with Zoltán Máj replacing Bence Lannert.
In the second half Kispest shifted into an even higher gear and scored four goals in eight minutes. In the 43rd minute the crowd witnessed the goal of the year. Bárányos met Rajz's inch-perfect cross from the left first time from 18 metres and blasted it into the top-right corner (2-0). A minute later Youla charged through the middle, left the entire visiting defence behind, rounded the goalkeeper and rolled the ball toward goal, but an MTK player cleared it off the line. In the 46th minute the ball was dancing in the blue-and-whites' net again. Csaba Tóth curled in a superb ball from the right and the arriving Youla turned it into the net from 11 metres for Kispest's third goal (3-0). Three minutes later it was Patkó György who took centre stage. The Kispest forward first smashed Youla's pass into the visitors' goal, then two minutes later beat the MTK defence after an individual move (5-0). After taking a five-goal lead, our team eased off slightly, although we continued to create chances and did not add another goal.
In the autumn we beat MTK 8–0 away, but even so perhaps nobody expected such a convincing Kispest victory. Our team deserved to win by this margin, and based on the chances created the final score was even flattering to the visitors.
MTK are now nine points behind Honvéd. Ferencváros are six points off first place.
Mathematically, the green-and-whites can still catch us, but in reality the chances are so small that our team can practically be regarded as champions.
In the next round, Honvéd BKE play Monor SE at the MFA Youth Centre on Monday, May 12, at 19:30.
