Between 1975 and 1981 he made 187 league appearances for the Kispest side, was part of the 1979–80 championship team and the 1977–78 runners-up. He also appeared in the European Cup and UEFA Cup, and was a member of the Honvéd side that won the Champions' Tournament in 1977 and 1975. István Kocsis won 20 caps for Hungary. His memory is respectfully preserved by Kispest supporters.
