“Uncle Öcsi” – that is what the nation called him, and that is how he remains in our hearts. His career blossomed at Kispesti AC and later Budapest Honvéd, where, playing alongside fellow world-class star József Bozsik, he led Bp. Honvéd to five league titles.
Together with his international teammates, he elevated Hungarian football among the best teams in the world. He was the symbol of the “Mighty Magyars”, the Golden Team – as captain, leader and role model.
He became an Olympic champion in 1952, was one of the heroes of the 6–3 victory in London in 1953 and a World Cup silver medallist in 1954. After the revolution, he wrote another chapter in football history in Spain with Real Madrid, winning league titles and European Cups and scoring hundreds of goals.
After retiring, he also proved himself as a coach. From Australia to Greece, from Spain to Chile, his name was spoken with respect everywhere. He returned to Hungary in 1992, and in the final years of his life he was regarded not only as a sportsman, but as a national icon and one of the greatest symbols of Hungarian identity.
Today, on the anniversary of his death, we remember not only the player, but also the man who always helped those in need.
Those who saw him play will never forget him. Those who only heard about him know it too: talent like his is born only rarely.
Rest in peace, Uncle Öcsi!
