The striker, nicknamed the “Nation's Bomber” because of the terrifying power of his shots, was not only one of the defining figures of an era but also a symbol of club loyalty and goalscoring instinct. Lajos Tichy was born in Budapest on March 21, 1935 and joined Honvéd, one of the world's outstanding teams of the era, in 1953 at the age of just 18. He learned his trade alongside giants such as Ferenc Puskás, Sándor Kocsis and József Bozsik. By 1954 and 1955 he was already a member of the championship-winning side.
After the events of 1956, Lajos Tichy carried the Kispest team on his shoulders. He scored 244 goals in 320 league matches during his career. He finished as the Hungarian league's top scorer five times and, with him playing a leading role, Honvéd won the Central European Cup in 1959 and the Hungarian People's Republic Cup in 1964.
His shooting was legendary: it was said that if Tichy let fly from 25–30 metres, goalkeepers were better off getting out of the way. As a player he collected two league titles, four silver medals and one bronze with the red-and-whites. Although at club level he was “only” crowned champion twice, his statistics for the national team place him among the world's greats. He scored 51 goals in 72 internationals, a tally that still leaves him fourth on Hungary's all-time list behind Puskás, Kocsis and Schlosser. He appeared at three World Cups (1958, 1962, 1966) and won a bronze medal at the 1964 European Championship.
The bond between Lajos Tichy and Honvéd did not end when he retired. He returned to the touchline as a coach and was the man who took Honvéd back to the summit: in 1980, after exactly 25 years of waiting, he guided Kispest to another league title. That made him one of the few people to become champions with the club both as a player and as a head coach.
Since Lajos Tichy's death in 1999, his cult status among Kispest supporters has only grown. A statue preserves his memory at the sports complex that bears his name. He was the last “true” Kispest giant, proving that it is possible to become a global star while wearing the colours of a single club.
