On Sunday, in addition to celebrating the 116th anniversary of our club's foundation with various events, we claimed a 3–0 victory over Budafoki MTE and moved to the top of the table with a perfect record. We also presented the medals and trophy to our U16 team, who won the league title last season, and handed out the Puskás Awards as well.
With the latter, our club revived a tradition that had been forgotten for years. For the first time since 2022, the Puskás Foundation again awarded the Puskás Award, presented to a young footballer from the Honvéd Academy who produces outstanding performances and displays exemplary conduct, as well as to a coach or professional who has carried out above-average work and achieved success in youth development.
The Puskás Foundation is an organisation founded by Uncle Öcsi, whose 'key objective is to support Honvéd and Hungarian youth football, nurture young talents and improve their opportunities to play sport. Alongside fulfilling these goals, an important duty of the foundation is to promote Ferenc Puskás's football career and football intelligence'.
While his health allowed, Puskás Öcsi himself also played an active role in the foundation's work and in shaping the board of trustees' decisions.
The award winners from the most recent, 2024-25 league season:
The award for best youth player went to Dávid János Gáspár. Dávid was born in 2007, is a midfielder and has been with our club since 2018, improving steadily year after year. As a result, he is currently captain of our second team and already has a professional contract with the first team.
“I am very happy to have received this award. It is good feedback for me that I am on the right path. I want to show myself in the senior team as soon as possible and prove that I did not receive this award by accident” Dávid said after receiving the award.
The award for best coach went to Márton Bogdánfi. Marci was born in 1993 and, despite his young age, has already been part of our Academy coaching staff for nine years. Last season he coached the U17 team, finishing runners-up in the National Elite League and also second at the Puskás-Suzuki Cup – beating Real Madrid among others.
“This award is not just about me; I also owe thanks to the staff members and all my players. We were able to complete a journey and a process that was reflected not only in results, but also in the fact that we managed to move many players up to older age groups. Viktor Petrók, Erik Kovács and Zsombor Liziczay were all able to make their senior debuts in NB II, while we also supplied players to NB III and the U19s, and many trained with the first team as well. That is probably what the academy recognised. I was already motivated, but this award encourages me to try to pass on my knowledge to the boys with even greater dedication and motivation, and to keep developing myself in the same way” – Marci said, also revealing where he had put the award.
“For now I have put it next to my TV so I see it when I wake up, but I definitely want to find a special place for it so it always reminds me that this is worth doing!” – he added.
