As is known, we drew 2–2 with Vasas in Sunday’s season finale. The tension could be felt throughout the match, heightened further by the excellent atmosphere created by the two sets of supporters. The draw ultimately meant that Kazincbarcika, behind Kisvárda, earned promotion to the top flight. After the match our head coach Tamás Feczkó assessed what he had seen.
“Every player dreams of matches like this during their career. It was a high-tempo game in a sensational atmosphere. Full credit to the refereeing team; I think they handled the match without error. In the first half we imposed our will and had several chances that we should have converted. Vasas changed their shape for the second half, yet we still managed to take the lead. After the goal we had a clear chance, but surprisingly they converted their first major opportunity. We absolutely wanted to win this match; after a season like this we owed that much to our supporters and to ourselves. It is frustrating that the home side were able to equalise quickly even after our second goal to go in front. In the final seconds either team could have won the match. Based on the first half we should have won – they barely got near our goal – but based on the second half, a draw is a fair result.”
Strengthened by the winter signings and with Tamás Feczkó on the bench, our team collected 27 points from 15 league matches, producing the third-best record of the spring.
“A huge amount of work went into putting this squad together. The signings worked out very well, and the management put a lot of work into them, which laid the foundations for our success in the second half of the season. I am glad we were able to create competition for places in every position. The aim was to get the maximum out of every player so that the team could develop as well, and I think we achieved that. Next year we will have to work even harder to be more successful. The goal is for there to be as many happy Kispest supporters as possible all over the country” – the 47-year-old coach said, reflecting on the past six months.
“There will be sixteen teams in NB II; it makes absolutely no difference what they are called. I would be very happy if Honvéd could continue this trend. Teams will certainly look at us differently next year. It has been a very long time since NB II had such an even and difficult championship as the next one is shaping up to be,” – our head coach said about the balance of power.
