Unfriendly, chilly weather and a biting wind greeted the veterans’ derby between Honvéd BKE and Ferencváros, but that did nothing to dampen the spirits of the sizeable crowd. There was a true derby atmosphere around the pitch, with the Kispest contingent in the stands, made up mainly of academy players, loudly backing "our boys", while the opposition also had plenty of support.
As expected, the match was played at a high tempo, and Honvéd BKE made an excellent start. Youla gave the red-and-blacks the lead as early as the 9th minute: our forward met a cross from the right and, with a half-turn, fired into the net (1–0).
Unfortunately, the lead did not last long. Two minutes later, following a Ferencváros corner, Csiszár headed past Komora to level the score (1–1). After the quick exchange of goals, Honvéd tried to take control again. They came close to regaining the lead before the break, but Lannert’s 22-metre free kick unfortunately crashed against the crossbar. In the 23rd minute, however, our side was back in front: this time Youla beat Sikur with a header to make the half-time score 2–1.
Even second half, missed sitters
At the start of the second half, Honvéd BKE brought on Zoltán Máj for Gálvölgyi, but he was on the pitch for only 20 minutes before having to be substituted because of injury.
While Honvéd had dominated the first half, the match became more evenly balanced after the break. The visitors pushed forward more in search of an equaliser, producing an intense, high-tempo game with chances at both ends for the supporters to enjoy.
Early in the second half, Youla could have put Honvéd two goals ahead. Starting from the halfway line, he left the defenders behind and rounded the onrushing goalkeeper, but, forced wide, he eventually sent the ball past the empty net. A huge chance went begging! At the other end, Komora had to produce a fine save to preserve the narrow lead.
No further goals were scored in the end, and Honvéd BKE left the pitch as 2–1 winners. After the match, the supporters celebrated the Honvéd BKE players, the autumn champions, for a long time.
Unbeaten and five points clear at the top
Thanks to the victory, Honvéd BKE head into the winter break top of the league with 29 points, five clear of second-placed Ferencváros. It later emerged that Pénzügyőr SE had beaten MTK, meaning PSE finished third and MTK fourth.
The Kispest side completed an impressive unbeaten autumn campaign: with 9 wins and 2 draws, they lead the table.
