Pre-season is over and the league campaign begins, with the closing match of the opening round away to Videoton FC Fehérvár, relegated from NB I. Our team played seven friendlies in 21 days, with a total of 33 footballers getting the chance to show Tamás Feczkó that they deserve a place in the starting line-up. Four new players joined us during the summer: Ákos Zuigeber arrived from MTK and Ádám Gyurcsó from Cyprus to strengthen the attack, while Kevin Kállai came from Diósgyőr for the right side of defence and Bence Varga joined from Csákvár to reinforce the back line. Three academy players made their first-team debuts during pre-season: Ferenc Ujváry in defence, Dávid Gáspár in midfield and Ádám Nyers in attack. In recent weeks we beat all three of our “divisional peers” (Tiszakécske 3–0, Kecskemét 4–1, BVSC 3–2), played a close match against Conference League qualifying participants Maccabi Haifa, and were involved in a high-scoring game away to Hungarian Cup holders Paksi FC. Across the seven matches we scored 15 goals, with Sebestyén Ihrig-Farkas, Ákos Zuigeber and Ákos Baki our most prolific players, while our 16-year-old forward Erik Kovács recorded the most assists (3).

What you need to know about Videoton FC Fehérvár:
Founded: 1941
Club colours: red and blue
League position last season: 11. (NB I)
Head coach: Boér Gábor
Major honours: 3x Hungarian champions, 2x Hungarian Cup winners
At the end of May, the Székesfehérvár club said goodbye to Hungary's top flight after 25 years. It was a highly successful period for the Fejér County side, who won three league titles and two Hungarian Cups and reached the Europa League group stage twice; only a year ago they were still involved in Conference League qualifying. Videoton finished the league season in terrible form, failing even to score in their final four matches and being relegated from NB I after finishing 11th.
Their squad has changed almost completely compared with last season, with 15 new players arriving so far, while Gábor Boér has replaced Krisztián Tímár on the bench. Their friendly results have not been poor – they remained unbeaten – although apart from one NB II side (BVSC) and one Serbian top-flight opponent, they faced two NB III and two Romanian second-tier teams.
Players with ties to both clubs:
Videoton's squad includes one of our former players, Gergely Bobál. The Kispest academy product last played in Kispest in the 2023/24 season, when he scored six league goals.
Our squad includes four former Fehérvár players. Summer signing Bence Varga came through the academy in Fehérvár but never appeared for the first team in a league match, while Ádám Gyurcsó recorded 27 goals and 41 assists in 140 competitive matches for the red-and-blues. Tomas Tujvel kept goal for Fehérvár between 2018 and 2019, including in a Europa League group-stage match against BATE Borisov, while Szilveszter Hangya spent six years as a player in Székesfehérvár.
Previous meetings:
We will face Videoton for the first time in the second division. We previously met 115 times in the top flight and also played them in the Hungarian Cup final in 2019.
We have reason to seek revenge: we came away empty-handed from our last four matches against Videoton, and since the 2017 'title decider' we have beaten the Fehérvár side only twice.
Instead of recalling our last five matches against Videoton, this time we look back at five memorable moments from matches against them over the past 13 years, in chronological order.
Lovric saves a penalty – 2012: Videoton–Budapest Honvéd 0–1 (Goal: Zivanovic 12')
The closing stages of the 2012/13 Videoton–Honvéd match produced a situation rarely seen in football and almost never in Hungary since. Marco Rossi's side had played for more than 80 minutes with a one-goal lead away to a Videoton team that would later qualify for the Europa League group stage, but in the 90+1st minute the home side were awarded a penalty for a foul by Szabolcs Kemenes and our goalkeeper was sent off. As Marco Rossi had already used all three substitutions, he could not bring on another goalkeeper for the penalty, so our defender and club legend Ivan Lovric put on the gloves – and saved Nemanja Nikolics's shot headed for the bottom-right corner, preserving the lead until the final whistle.
We would take it again: ten years ago we beat Videoton on opening day – 2015: Honvéd–Videoton 1–0 (Youla 84')
Ten years ago, in the first round of the OTP Bank Liga, we hosted defending champions Videoton in the opening round. For a long time it looked as though there would be no goal against the previous season's champions, but in the 84th minute Soulaymane Youla punished a Fehérvár mistake and decided the match. An interesting parallel is that this time too we meet Videoton in our first league game.

Victory at the death – 2016: Honvéd–Videoton 2–1 (Eppel 31', Vernes 90+2'; Feczesin 32')
Just as in the opening round, Videoton were beaten at the Bozsik in the third cycle of the championship as well. Although András Horváth had to make several excellent saves in the opening half-hour and the visitors also hit the woodwork, Márton Eppel gave us the lead in the 30th minute before Feczesin equalised in the first half. Eppel had another goal ruled out in controversial circumstances after the break, but Videoton could not avoid defeat in added time: Márton Eppel provided the assist and Richárd Vernes, positioned centrally, finished from close range to settle the destination of the three points.

Eppel's goal secured the league title – 2017: Honvéd–Videoton 2–1 (Eppel 60')
In 2017 our team faced a title decider: the 14th league championship was at stake against Videoton. Before the match, either a win or a draw would have secured the gold medal; Videoton could become champions only by winning in Kispest. Going into the final round, Honvéd were first and Videoton second, both on 64 points. We led the Fehérvár side only because we had more wins – and in the last round we hosted Videoton themselves. Ikenne-King's assist and Márton Eppel's goal are now part of history.
Our first victory in Fehérvár's new stadium – 2021: Fehérvár–Honvéd 1–2 (Dárdai 45'; Hidi 22', Batik 79')
We had already played several league matches in Videoton's new stadium, opened in autumn 2018, but so far we have left with all three points only once: in 2021 Dárdai answered Patrik Hidi's goal, but Bence Batik's header was worth three points.
Our most recent victory over the Fehérvár side came in 2022, when we won 3–1 at Bozsik Aréna.
Our league record against Videoton:
115 matches, 48 wins, 21 draws, 46 defeats
Referee:
Monday evening's match will be refereed by Bence Csonka, who most recently took charge of one of our games in spring 2024, when we defeated ETO FC Győr. He also refereed our winning season opener away to Csákvár in 2023.
This will be his ninth Honvéd match; under his refereeing we have so far recorded five wins, three draws and no defeats.
