Story of the current season:
Tatabánya began a season in the second division again after ten years, having played only in the third tier and the county first division since their relegation in 2014. Gergely Gyürki's side immediately came from two goals down to beat Szeged in the opening round, then suffered their first league defeat one round later in Kispest. In Round 4 they beat Vasas away, but then went six matches without collecting a point, and at the beginning of September they were thrashed 7-0 at home by Kazincbarcika (interestingly, our current player Ádám Szamosi featured for the winning side in that match). After a draw at Csákvár came two wins and another draw, before the blue-and-whites ended the autumn season with defeat in Békéscsaba. Spring, however, did not start well for Tatabánya, as they opened with a two-goal defeat in Szeged.
Squad:
Tatabánya's squad includes several former Honvéd players. Richárd Jelena played in Kispest in the 2015-16 season, while András Eördögh wore the red-and-black shirt in 7 NB I and 24 NB II matches. Gábor Buna is also a Honvéd academy graduate and made his top-flight debut for our team in the 2019-20 season, replacing our current captain Barna Kesztyűs on that occasion.
Kristopher Vida also spent time at our academy, but unlike the others he did not play a competitive match for the first team.
Head-to-head history:
The two teams have met in 87 top-flight league matches in total, and Honvéd have won almost half of them (42). The first match took place in 1948, when Bányász celebrated, but six months later we took revenge with a 3-1 victory through goals from György Városi, Ferenc Puskás and István Horváth. We first won in Tatabánya in 1950 (4-1), with Gyula Grosics in our goal. The legendary goalkeeper of the Golden Team later joined Tatabánya, and Bányász's stadium was also named after him. From 1956 to 1992 there was not a single season in which we did not meet Tatabánya, and during this period the two sides also played a cup final: in 1985 we recorded an emphatic 5-0 victory over the blue-and-whites, with László Dajka opening the scoring before Kálmán Kovács and Lajos Détári both struck twice.
We first met Tatabánya in the second division in 2003, winning 1-0, before the return fixture in Kispest ended in a goalless draw.
Tatabánya were relegated from the top flight in the 2007-08 season. That campaign we lost 4-3 away but won 4-1 at home. Until last August, our only meetings with the blue-and-whites had been friendlies: we won 4-1 in 2012 and 5-2 four years later. Richárd Vernes also scored in the latter match.
Last August we finally hosted the Komárom-Esztergom county side in a competitive match again, and a superb header from Zoltán Medgyes gave us a 1-0 victory.

Statistics and facts:
- The sides have met almost 90 times in top-flight matches, with an average of 2.9 goals per game.
- Our biggest win over Tatabánya came in 1968, when we won 6-1; the margin was again five goals in our favour in the 1985 cup final.
- The most goals in a match between the two sides came in 1984. Although Tatabánya led twice, Honvéd completed the match with a 6-3 victory.
- We have met Bányász three times in the second division and have not conceded a goal in any of those matches.
Stadium:
The team's home is the Grosics Gyula Stadion. Although our last meeting with Tatabánya at this venue was in 2007, that was not Honvéd's most recent appearance in Tatabánya, as in 2017 and 2019 we played Hungarian Cup matches there as the away side against Budaörs and advanced on both occasions. This will be our 46th league match away to Tatabánya (44 in NB I, 1 in NB II). Our record is 15 wins, 13 draws and 17 defeats.
Referee:
Árpád Jakab will referee the match. This will be his first competitive game involving our first team, although he has previously taken charge of a league match for Honvéd II.
Expectations:
Our defender Ákos Baki, who made his competitive debut against Budafok, said he had joined a close-knit group and hopes the work invested will also bring a result on Sunday. Our defender expects a tough match against our direct rivals Tatabánya.
