We collected three important points in the headline match of round 11 of the Merkantil Bank Liga, moving up to second place in the table.

Vasas’s draw in Zugló made this match even more important than it had looked before the round, with second-placed Mezőkövesd Zsóry FC visiting the Bozsik Aréna. In terms of points dropped, we went into the game with the best home record, while the visitors had collected only five points from their four away matches before this round.

Tamás Feczkó made just one change to last week’s starting eleven, bringing Ákos Zuigeber in for Zoltán Medgyes. It proved an excellent decision, as in the third minute a cross from Csontos was headed by Zuigeber into the right side of the goal (1–0). In the 11th minute, following a cross from the right by Csirmaz, Baki tried to stop the ball reaching the centre-forward arriving in the middle, but it unfortunately deflected off our defender’s foot into Tujvel’s goal (1–1). Two minutes later Ujváry embarked on a solo run and then delivered an excellent ball around the edge of the six-yard box. Kántor arrived perfectly in the middle, but the same could not be said of Keresztes, who could only bring down our forward, so referee Molnár awarded a penalty, which Csontos confidently converted once again (2–1).

In the 17th minute the visitors’ attack intercepted a cross-field pass and, although they could drive at our defence with a numerical advantage, Tujvel produced a huge save with his foot. In the final moments of stoppage time Alex Szabó crossed into the middle and Kántor tried an acrobatic effort with his back to goal, but the loose ball off the defenders went wide. After the restart Kövesd created the first big chance: substitute Bartusz dribbled before shooting, but Tujvel again produced a superb save and kept the visitors to one goal. In the 59th minute Hangya delivered a pinpoint cross, and once again Zuigeber arrived at exactly the right moment. Just as in the first half, he gave Deczky no chance, showing excellent elevation to head the ball into the net (3–1). It was already the 22-year-old forward’s seventh league goal of the season, taking him to the top of the scoring chart. In the 76th minute, after a corner from Lőrinczy, Varjas headed in from close range (3–2), but once again our response was immediate. Three minutes later Pekár fought for the ball and switched it to substitute Medgyes on the far side, who smashed an unstoppable shot into the far corner (4–2). And we were far from finished: in the 87th minute, Medgyes carried the ball out from our own half on a counter-attack and then played in Pinte, who curled the ball beautifully past his defender and Deczky (5–2). After the home league match against Karcag, this was the second time this season that we recorded a 5–2 scoreline. The victory moved us up to second place in the table. On Thursday we play in the Hungarian Cup against Debreceni VSC. Interestingly, our hosts also won 5–2 today – against Újpest.

MERKANTIL BANK LIGA 2025/26, ROUND 11

BUDAPEST HONVÉD FC–Mezőkövesd Zsóry FC 5–2 (2–1)

Bozsik Aréna, 3,521 spectators. Referee: Attila Molnár (Péter Garai, Dávid Dobos).

HONVÉD: Tujvel – Szabó A., Baki, Csontos – Ujváry, Pekár (Sigér, 80.), Szamosi (Somogyi, 80.), Hangya (Kállai, 85.) – Zuigeber (Pinte, 67.), Kántor, Gyurcsó (Medgyes, 67.). Head coach: Tamás Feczkó

Mezőkövesd: Deczky – Csirmaz, Varjas, Keresztes, Debreceni – Csatári (Lőrinczy, 64.), Bertus (Zvekanov, 64.), Vidnyánszky (Kovalenko, 64.) – Vörös, Pintér (Bartusz, 41.), Szalai. Head coach: Aurél Csertői

G: Zuigeber (3., 59.), Csontos (14.), Medgyes (79.), Pinte (87.) and Baki (12. – own goal), Varjas (76.).

Tamás Feczkó, head coach:

First of all, on behalf of everyone working at our club, I would like to express our sincere condolences to the people of Mezőkövesd following the passing of József Hagyacki. I am sure he leaves an enormous void behind. We played against the best team we have faced so far; their position in the table is fully deserved. We knew that Honvéd had beaten Mezőkövesd only once before, and that motivated us as well. We started very proactively, took the lead as early as the third minute and then, two minutes after the visitors equalised, managed to go in front again, which was very important for us. We wanted our attacking midfielders to be available between the lines; if the opposition managed to close them down, we wanted to open them up down the flanks. I liked our play in the second half: on several occasions we were able to break through their defensive structure. In the second half our aim was to take the right amount of risk; we built from deeper because the opposition had prepared a good tactical plan and passed the ball well. Our counter-attacks were dangerous, we scored some fine goals and our finishing was good. When we needed him, Tomás (Tomás Tujvel  – ed.) made two huge saves. It was a difficult week, but mentally we reacted very well to the past week. There is still a lot of value in this team.

Aurél Csertői, head coach:

Unfortunately, Honvéd played better than us today. Our defending was not stable and we made a lot of mistakes. In the second half we threw everything into attack, but they caught us on the counter and Honvéd deserved to win.
