After battling to a draw against four-time cup winners Győr, our women’s team faced another stern test on Sunday, this time away to Újpest on Tábor Street. The hosts came into the game in good form, having drawn 2–2 in the midweek round with last season’s runners-up, PAFC. Both teams had seven points before kick-off, but Újpest’s better goal difference put the purple-and-whites fifth in the table.
The match began at a high tempo. Following a home corner, Viktória Véglás had a chance but sent the ball over the bar. In the 15th minute, Fanni Vachter swung in a cross from out wide, but Újpest goalkeeper Anna Terestyéni came off her line well and gathered. In the 29th minute, Samantha Tristan played in Csuhai, who tried to score from a tight angle, but our goalkeeper Nikolett Krizsan saved low at the near post; Rebeka Róth then cleared the resulting Újpest corner. Play was evenly balanced thereafter, with neither side managing to create a clear-cut chance.
We started the second half well. After winning the ball back, Maria Palama lofted it into Újpest’s penalty area and Hajna Vas headed it down to set up Fanni Vachter, who rolled the ball into the net from close range (0–1). After the drinks break, Újpest won possession on the edge of our area. Tristan passed to Nagy, arriving on the right, who fired into the far bottom corner (1–1). In the closing stages, following a spell of passing at the back, Samantha Tristan intercepted an inaccurate pass from Krizsan and lifted the ball over our goalkeeper to score the hosts’ second goal (2–1). Our team almost equalised in added time when Fanni Vachter delivered a corner, only for the ball to strike the post.
Our women’s team therefore left Újpest empty-handed. Next Saturday we face reigning champions Ferencváros.

Balázs Dörnyei, head coach: “The first ten minutes belonged to Újpest. We started a little sleepily, but it was already clear in the warm-up that we were a little tired mentally rather than physically. This was our third game in a week, but that is no excuse, since our opponents were in the same situation. Apart from those first ten minutes, neither goal was really under threat, so 0–0 at half-time was fair. You could see that there was very little between the two sides and that a defensive mistake could prove decisive. We managed to exploit one and take the lead. What I really regret is that we then made two mistakes, which decided the match.”
Rebeka Róth: “It is hard to know what to say after such a frustrating defeat. We did not create as many chances as we usually do, but everyone gave everything they had today. It was a very evenly matched game and we even hit the post late on. We will learn what we can from this and focus on the next match.”
