Brave display at the bronze medallists

Our women’s team visited last season’s bronze medallists MTK in round 2 of the Simple Liga, where a serious test awaited our newly promoted side.

In the first half the girls held their own well and for the most part we were equal opponents to the much stronger blue-and-whites, who nevertheless scored in the 20th and 28th minutes and went into the break with a two-goal lead.

After the change of ends, our team clearly fought for an equaliser and did not want merely to see out the second forty-five minutes. At times we perhaps took even more risks than necessary in search of a goal, but despite our territorial superiority we were unable to take our chances, while MTK increased their lead further through counter-attacks. Our team embraced its own playing style and played bravely, but thanks to better finishing and greater experience, the more fancied home side took all three points.

In the next round Astra will come to Kispest, and if the girls continue to play with this spirit, there will be a chance to claim our first victory.

Martin Masaryk: “I would like to congratulate MTK on the victory, and the girls on never giving up for a single moment and wanting to play football throughout the match. We were confident even under pressure and tried to play with style; in certain phases of the game I think we were even superior to our opponents, and physically we held up well too. MTK are a strong team, with quality players in every position and a deep squad, and that was visible in the match. I believe in our own philosophy and want to continue developing and teaching the girls along those lines, even if there are occasionally heavier defeats. We are working to be successful in the long term. We are on the right path; if we continue like this, the successes will come.“
