Balázs Dörnyei’s side beat Szekszárdi UFC 2–0 in round two of the Simple Women’s League thanks to goals from Fanni Vachter and Sára Krisztin.

Although our women’s team began the season with a 1–0 defeat away to MTK, some promising football in the opening round gave the squad confidence ahead of their first home match against Szekszárdi UFC. There was also a score to settle with the team from Tolna county, as we had failed to win our last two meetings in Kispest—although we did beat the yellow-and-blacks 6–0 away in April. For a long time, it seemed our opponents might not even start the season, but Szekszárd’s management ultimately put together a relatively promising squad under the circumstances.

We took the lead with our first clear chance when we won a free kick in a promising position in the 23rd minute. Rather than shooting, Horváthová unexpectedly picked out Vachter lurking on the right, and she found the far corner with pinpoint accuracy (1–0), scoring her first goal of the campaign. Last season she finished fourth in the scoring charts with 16 league goals. Five minutes later Vachter stood over another promising  free kick, which Maria Palama—focused and excellent throughout the match—glanced just centimetres wide of the left post. Our side closed down the spaces superbly and virtually stifled Szekszárd’s build-up play, denying the visitors any clear opportunities.

Kispest remained in control after the break, but the second goal that would put the result beyond doubt proved elusive. We threatened again from a set piece in the 61st minute, and Williams came close to putting the match to bed on several occasions. In the 73rd minute, new signing Lilien Borzák, who had come off the bench, tried her luck from 16 metres and was desperately unlucky: her shot struck the left post. Then, in the 76th minute, Krisztin headed home a perfectly weighted ball from Róth, sealing all three points.

Next weekend, our team travels to PMFC.
