As is known, last Saturday our team beat Spartak Myjava 3–2 in a friendly. Although the Slovak champions scored the opening goal, shortly afterwards a visiting defender inadvertently put the ball into her own net, allowing us to equalise. A few minutes later Fanni Vachter found the net, before Petra Gégény put the finishing touch on the victory with the winning goal in the 89th minute. After the match, Balázs Dörnyei stressed that following the mistakes made in the first half, the team managed to put things right during the break.
“We started the match well, but made an individual mistake that gave our opponents a penalty. It took us time to get up to speed and we allowed the opposition too many opportunities. I’m pleased that we were able to discuss the mistakes we made in the first half during the break, and in the second half the opponent no longer managed to get in behind us because of those errors” – our head coach summed up.
On Saturday our team will play away to the Szombathely side in the Hungarian Cup quarter-final. The teams last met in November, when their Simple Women’s League round-10 fixture ended in a 2–2 draw.
“Although they have had some departures, when they came here last year they were working with a squad of around 27 players, so they certainly do not have a shortage of numbers. I think they will prepare for this match by taking as little risk as possible, because everything is decided over a single game. We have to be ready to break down their defence. It is very important that we score the first goal, because that always makes our job easier. It is also important to keep a clean sheet. Fortunately, up front we are always capable of scoring two or three goals, which gives the team a lot of strength. If we had had one or two more goalscorers in the autumn, we would be higher in the table on points. I expect an intense match. Most of our team have not yet experienced what it is like to play in a Hungarian Cup quarter-final, so now they will get to experience it.”
Blanka Bokor suffered an ankle injury in November and faced a lengthy spell on the sidelines. Although she was able to return to training after recovering, a knee injury held her back shortly afterwards. Our midfielder came on as a substitute in the friendly against Myjava and said she was happy to be back and able to help the team.
“It felt very good to return to the pitch and help the team again, as I hadn’t played since November. Pre-season went by quickly; we have a lot of training behind us and the friendly matches also went well. I hope we can finish with a similar result in the cup match next week."
