Our head coach Balázs Dörnyei led the team into the semi-final against DVTK as a record-holder. During his career he has celebrated ten Hungarian Cup triumphs and is unbeaten in the competition across 43 consecutive winning ties. Interestingly, since taking charge of senior teams, his sides have reached the final every single time. Under his leadership he has lost only once: 11 years ago MTK beat his team in the final, in Diósgyőr.
The match began at a good tempo. Although we were only in the second minute, Simona Horváthová was already able to take a corner, but our opponents cleared. A minute later our forward Petra Gégény found herself in a promising position, but the home defence blocked. In the 10th minute we were only inches away from taking the lead: Blanka Bokor played Gégény through, who rolled the ball towards goal, but it passed just wide of the post. As expected beforehand, the match was played at a good pace and featured plenty of duels. We created two chances within two minutes: first Petra Gégény laid the ball off for Eszter Czinege, whose attempt was blocked by the home defence, then a minute later Gégény aimed for the top-left corner from inside the penalty area, but her shot went wide. Although overall we had more possession and created more chances, the hosts also came close to scoring late in the half: in the 36th minute DVTK's 19-year-old midfielder shot from 19 metres, but the ball flew over the bar.
After the break our head coach made two changes: Fanni Vachter replaced Rebeka Róth, and a few minutes later Eszter Csáki came on for Petra Gégény. Our team took the lead in the 55th minute when Eszter Czinege met Simona Horváthová's cross and headed into the net. (0–1) After the goal our team moved up a gear and came close to doubling the advantage. In the closing stages the play took place mainly in our half, before the hosts took advantage of a misplaced pass and equalised through Pierre-Jerome. (1–1) Normal time ended 1–1, so the finalists were decided by a penalty shootout. Balázs Dörnyei's team eventually won the shootout 4–3 to reach the final.
