Our newly promoted women's team hosted Astra at home in Matchday 3 of the top division, and the girls took to the field with a clear objective: they were chasing their first win of the season!
Martin Masaryk's side had already had a good chance of taking all three points in the opening round, but without success. A week later we lost away to MTK despite brave football, and now the team could finally celebrate victory after beating Astra 2–0.
The girls took the lead as early as the 5th minute through Kós Gabriella, and late in the half we increased our advantage, this time through Csuhai Vivien, who had provided the assist for the opening goal. Overall we controlled the match confidently and played well. Of course, the victory was not straightforward. Astra proved to be a tough opponent and other circumstances also made our task more difficult; it is enough to mention that Csuhai Vivien received, to put it mildly, a highly debatable red card in the 57th minute, meaning we had to play more than half an hour with ten players.
Our team showed, however, that they can rise to the challenge not only in terms of football but also in terms of fighting spirit. Despite the difficult circumstances the girls did not break, defending the result with disciplined, committed play and fighting for one another, so in the end we could celebrate victory!
Budapest Honvéd's women's team had last won an NB I match on 18 May 2014, against Szeged (3–2), so after more than ten years we could once again celebrate three points in the top flight.
Martin Masaryk: “All credit goes to the girls. We earned our first victory and believe it will be followed by further successes. This success belongs to the whole of Honvéd, to everyone who helps and supports us; we can feel that women's football is important to the club. The girls performed well on the pitch. The period after the red card was more about fighting, but we had to handle that situation too; we have to learn what to do in moments like that. I am proud of the girls, I could see their happiness, and these are the moments everyone working in sport strives for.“
