Following a three-week break, the OTP Bank Liga resumes with Round 9, featuring a capital derby on the refurbished pitch of the Bozsik Aréna. Our team hosts fourth-placed Újpest FC on Sunday at 16:45. Our opponents have displayed an effective attacking game this season, tied with Vasas for the most goals scored in the league. The international break provided an opportunity for our squad to regroup, and we naturally head into the restart with renewed energy.
Újpest have started the season strongly, sitting in fourth place after eight games with 4 wins, 2 draws, and 2 defeats. Their last defeat came on 21 August, when Paks overcame them (2–1). Since then, they took a point from Üllői út (2–2), eliminated Dorog in extra time in the MOL Hungarian Cup (0–2 a.e.t.), and defeated ZTE 2–1. During the international break, Zoltán Szélesi's side played to a 1–1 draw against struggling NB II side Videoton FC Fehérvár. Újpest have scored 17 goals in the league so far (tied with Vasas for the most) and conceded 13. They also boast a player among the top scorers: Matko sits third in the scoring charts with 5 goals, trailing only Jurek (7) and Szalai (6).
Our side last met Újpest on 21 April 2023, when the purple-and-whites took all three points from Kispest with an 89th-minute strike. You have to go all the way back to 12 August 2017 to find a match where we defeated our Sunday rivals on home soil. On that occasion, Lanzafame (72') and Kamber (82') responded to Zsótér's early goal.
In top-flight history, the sides have faced each other 222 times, with 58 victories for Honvéd, 55 draws, and 109 Újpest wins. Throughout the rivalry, 302 Honvéd goals have been scored compared to 473 for the purple-and-whites. With Honvéd playing at home, 111 matches have taken place, 31 of which ended in our victory.
Squad news:
Ádám Somogyi is definitely ruled out due to a serious injury, while Patrik Pinte is also doubtful for Sunday. However, our forward with La Liga experience, Alberto Marí, was already able to feature for 45 minutes against Tiszakécske.
